The Death of Cave Johnson

Republic Wireless, brought to you by Bandwidth.com, has launched as of today and is currently in open-beta. For a start-up fee of $199 you get an LG Optimus, as well as unlimited calling, texting, and data for just $19/month without the burden of a monthly contract. Sound too good to be true? Well, as they say, here’s the catch: Republic Wireless utilizes local WiFi hotspots to make voice and data connections. They still offer cellular connectivity as a fall-back (on the Sprint network), but should you fail to keep a healthy ratio of WiFi/Cellular connectivity, you might be politely asked to leave. No official word on what that healthy ratio amounts to, but my guess would be anything over 50/50 (Cellular/WiFi) is discouraged. Fortunately, according to their data, the average person spends 60% of their time at or near a WiFi hotspot. The question remains: Can you move from WiFi->WiFi/WiFi->Cellular while maintaining an active call?
